The Omega Speedmaster Professional “Sapphire Sandwich” takes the classic Moonwatch design and gives it a more modern, slightly more refined execution.
The 42 sized stainless steel case keeps the familiar Speedmaster proportions, while the black step dial, applied Omega logo, and black tachymeter bezel preserve the look that has made the Moonwatch so recognizable. It is clean, balanced, and immediately familiar.
What sets the Sapphire Sandwich apart is the sapphire crystal on both the front and caseback. You get the scratch resistance of sapphire up front, while the exhibition back gives you a full view of the movement. For me, that makes this one of the best everyday versions of the modern Speedmaster. You will find yourself taking this one off just to look at the back.
Inside is Omega’s manual-wind Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861 with approximately 50 hours of power reserve. It is METAS-certified, highly resistant to magnetism, and brings modern accuracy and reliability to a watch that still keeps the traditional hand-wound Speedmaster experience.
The bracelet is another strong point. The current-generation five-link design tapers nicely and wears much better than some of the older Speedmaster bracelets. Combined with the 42mm case, the watch feels substantial without being bulky.
From a value standpoint, this is one of the easiest Speedmasters to understand. You are getting the classic Moonwatch design, a modern Master Chronometer movement, sapphire front and back, and an exhibition caseback without moving into limited-edition pricing.
This is one of the most desirable current-production Speedmasters because it gives you the traditional look with a more practical and premium specification.
