The Hublot Big Bang Unico Black Magic is a 45mm ceramic chronograph with a very different personality from a traditional luxury sports watch.
The black ceramic case is large, angular, and almost completely monochromatic. What keeps the watch from feeling flat is the openworked dial, which exposes much of the movement and gives the whole thing a layered, mechanical look.
The dial is busy, but that is part of the appeal here. You can see the chronograph mechanism working beneath the hands, while the bold hour markers and large handset keep the time easy to read. Small red accents add just enough contrast without breaking the all-black look.
Inside is Hublot’s in-house Unico automatic flyback chronograph movement. The flyback function allows the chronograph to be reset and restarted with a single push, and the movement is visible from both the dial side and through the exhibition caseback.
The Unico is one of the coolest parts of this watch. Hublot’s in-house automatic flyback chronograph puts much of the chronograph mechanism on display through the openworked dial, so you can actually see the movement doing its job. It is technical, functional, and visually a perfect fit for the Big Bang.
At 45mm, this is obviously not a subtle watch. That said, the ceramic case keeps the weight more manageable than the dimensions suggest, and the integrated rubber strap makes it surprisingly comfortable once it is on the wrist.
I think the Black Magic works because Hublot fully commits to the design. It is not trying to look vintage, restrained, or traditional. It is modern, technical, and intentionally industrial.
From a value standpoint, you are getting a full ceramic case, an in-house flyback chronograph movement, openworked construction, and a very distinctive design for considerably less than many comparable high-end ceramic chronographs.
It is not a rare watch in the limited-edition sense, but the Black Magic is one of the more recognizable Unico configurations and stands apart immediately from the polished steel and brighter Big Bang variants.
Condition The watch is flawless thanks to its ceramic construction. The case, crystal, bezel, and buckle are all flawless.
The watch is keeping excellent time on a timegrapher and does not require service at this time.
